The kickstand that comes with the Starlink Mini is fine for a quick setup at camp, but it is not much help on a car roof, under trees or on a windy day. A proper mount puts the dish where it gets a clear view of the sky, keeps it steady, and saves you setting it up every time you stop.
There is no single best mount. The right one depends on your vehicle, how long you stay in one spot and whether you leave the dish fitted. Here is how to work it out.
If you have a roof rack, a rack mount is the most secure and tidy option. The dish sits up high with a clear view, the cable can be run neatly, and it is ready to go when you pull up.
Tip: both the lockable mount and the aluminium bracket have room inside for our roof rack 30V booster. Run one Anderson cable up to the roof and the booster sits out of sight in the mount, with short leads and nothing to snag.
The Magnetic Flat Mounting Bracket Kit uses four magnets, each rated to about 45kg of pull, to hold the Mini flat on a steel roof. No drilling and no tools, and it comes off in seconds. It suits travellers who move every day and want to set up in seconds when they stop.
It needs a flat steel surface, so it will not work on aluminium or fibreglass roofs, most caravans or canopies. Wipe the roof and magnets clean before you fit it so grit does not scratch the paint.
The Suction Cup Mount uses four lever-lock cups to hold the Mini on a windscreen, sunroof or any smooth, non-porous panel. It is the most flexible and lowest cost option, and it is made from heat-resistant ABS to cope with hot Aussie cars. Great for hire cars, work vehicles and anyone who does not want to change their vehicle at all.
Fit it to clean, dry glass, and check the cups before each use.
| Mount | Fits | Best for | Lockable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slimline Lockable | Roof racks, canopies, caravans | Long trips, leaving it fitted | Yes |
| Aluminium Bracket | Roof racks, canopies, caravans | Permanent touring setups | No |
| Roof Rack Clamp | Rack bars 12–48mm | Compact rack setups | No |
| Magnetic | Flat steel roofs | Moving camp every day | No |
| Suction Cup | Glass, smooth panels | Temporary and hire vehicles | No |
The Mini comes with a 15m DC cable, which leaves metres to coil up once the dish is on the roof. A 3m, 5m or 10m DC cable makes for a much tidier install. On a 12V system, add a 30V booster to keep the connection stable. We explain why in Why do I need a 30V booster for my Starlink?
If you have a roof rack and tour for weeks at a time, go the lockable mount with the roof rack booster inside it. If you move every day in a vehicle with a steel roof, the magnetic kit is hard to beat. For the occasional trip or a hire car, the suction cup mount does the job for the least money.
