Will a myCOOLMAN Fridge Fit in My Ute? How to Measure Before You Buy

"Will it fit?" is the question we get asked most about portable fridges. Will it fit in the tub, under the roller cover, behind the seat, in the drawer system or in the caravan? Getting it wrong is a pain, so here is how to measure your space properly, plus the external dimensions of every myCOOLMAN fridge we sell.

Step 1: measure the space, not the vehicle brochure

Grab a tape measure and check the actual space the fridge will sit in. Every ute, canopy and drawer system is a little different, and factory figures rarely allow for tub liners, wheel arches, tie-down points or the roller cover canister.

Height: measure from the floor the fridge will sit on (tub floor, liner, drawer top or fridge slide) up to the lowest point above it. Under a roller cover, that is the underside of the cover or its rails, not the top of the tub sides.
Length and width: measure between the narrowest points, such as between the wheel arches and away from the roller cover canister at the front of the tub.
Door openings: check the canopy door, tailgate or caravan door the fridge has to pass through to get in.

Step 2: allow for what goes under and around it

Fridge slide: if the fridge sits on a slide, add the slide's height to the fridge height. A slide also lets you pull the fridge out to open it when the space above is tight.
Lid opening: a chest fridge needs room above it for the lid to open. Under a roller cover or low canopy shelf, you may need to slide the fridge out or open the cover to get into it.
Airflow: the compressor needs air to breathe. Leave a gap around the vents, as set out in the manual. A fridge jammed hard against the tub wall works harder and uses more power.
Handles, cables and covers: check whether the length includes the handles, and leave room for the power cable plug and a protective cover if you use one.

Step 3: compare with the fridge's external dimensions

The table below lists the external size of every myCOOLMAN chest fridge in our range, sorted by height, as height is usually the deciding measurement under a roller cover or canopy. All sizes are in millimetres.

All five Recreational Series fridges from 38L to 78L are 460mm high, so under a tight roller cover you can often go bigger in length without losing height.

Upright fridges for caravans, campers and canopies

Upright fridges open from the front, so they suit spaces where you cannot lift a lid, such as a canopy, camper trailer kitchen or caravan cabinet. Measure the cabinet or cut-out, and allow room for the door to swing open and for ventilation.

Don't forget the weight

A full fridge is far heavier than the empty weights above. Add the weight of food and drinks, check your tub, drawer or slide's load rating, and use proper tie-downs so the fridge cannot move on corrugations or under hard braking.

Quick fit checklist

Measure height to the lowest point above the fridge (roller cover, rails, canopy shelf).
Measure length and width at the narrowest points.
Add the height of any fridge slide.
Leave room for airflow, handles, the power plug and a cover.
Check how you will open the lid or door once it is in place.
Check the load rating of whatever it sits on.
